When it's time to install your child's safety seat, know that you do have options. There are experts that can show you how to install the seat properly or even do it for you. If you do choose to install yourself, you'll need to be certain that you are following proper instructions.

Check the safety seat manual and determine if the seat should be forward or back facing. This is based on age, weight, and height of the child. If possible, always install in the back seat. This is where any child under 13 should be seated. Every vehicle is different. You'll need to check your owner's manual to find out where the suggested location in your vehicle is best for installing the safety seat.

Place the safety seat into position and adjust into correct positioning, not tilted too far forward or back. Safety seats can be installed with either a latch or by using the seatbelt. Use the seatbelt by running through the safety seat as directed by the information located on the seat. Another option is to use the latch. To use the latch, you'll tether the safety seat to the vehicle. The safety seat will anchor to a lower bar towards the lower back of the vehicle's seat.

Once installed, it's time to test movement. The seat shouldn't move more than one inch in any direction. It doesn't matter if the seat is facing forward or back.
